I get a lot of correspondence and questions about the iClones (or those models that some people call the iPhone clones.) People often want to know if these are decent quality phones and what, if any, are the drawbacks. I have a variety of responses, but I often tell people that it’s a decent idea to stick with the better known models, like CECT. Once that’s said, people then will typically ask me about the good and bad points of this particular brand. So, in the following article, I’ll discuss what I see as the pros and cons of the CECT line of iClones.

The Pros:

The Cost (Both In Terms Of The Purchase Price And In Terms Of Owning And Using The Phone:) Without a doubt that thing that draws consumers to these clones is the price. It truly does come down to money. Not only are the CECT phones much less expensive than the name brand out of the box, but the savings doesn’t stop after you purchase the phone. These phones work with GSM sim cards, even those that aren’t part of a network or contract. So, there’s no high monthly bill (or credit check) to worry about and you can shop around and pay for only those features you need. (Although the pre paid all inclusive bundles are becoming very popular.)

So instead of paying close to $100 a month for a contract phone, you can pay far less than that on the no contract phone. I’ve had people tell me that they are able to use surf the net, text, and talk for under $20 per month. That’s a pretty substantial savings in this economy.

The Ability To Change Carriers And Features With Ease: A lack of commitment is one big draw to these clones. Many consumers go with the pre paid sim cards that are easy to walk away from whenever you’re ready to try something else or you find something cheaper. Since you have two sim slots, you can typically keep one for a constant number and another for the cheap pre paid cards that you may or may not purchase from month to month. People will often make calls (or texts and web usage) on the much cheaper sim and keep their same number and receive calls on the constant sim.

Also, the lack of a monthly plan allows for you to only pay for those things that you actually use. Some people don’t need to make a $30 a month commitment for web. Some folks don’t use more than 1,000 talk minutes per month. Some people may want web for one month and not the next. Some people really want the latest features but don’t want to be stuck with some of the undesirable and basic contract phones to save money. And, on the flip side, some consumers want non contract pricing along with all inclusive bundles that are often offered to only contract users. Both of these things are possible with the clones.

All Of The Needed Features As Well As Some Bonuses: There are many different models underneath the CECT umbrella. You can almost always find a model that has all of the features that you want. Most all of the clones have the features of the name brand. You can most certainly talk, text, web surf, use and record media, take photos and videos, read ebooks and listen to the radio. And, you can do all of this on a sleek and responsive touch screen that looks just like the original’s.

Aso, you can also download applications, games, and media onto the phone with ease since most all of them support Java and Bluetooth. Plus, most of these clones have extra speakers, two sim slots, a removable battery, talk to text, and shake and tilt. So, you do get some bonus features thrown in much of the time. And one more thing. There’s a lot of support and accessories for CECT phones, since they’ve become almost main stream.

The Cons: Now, we’ll move onto what could be called the minuses.

It’s Not Necessarily A Status Symbol: Let’s face it, the original model is a part of pop culture. Even though there are countless companies who have copied that design or general idea, there are some folks who still just want the original and won’t be happy until they have it. The CECT clones look very much like the original. Even side by side, the similarities are there. But, of course, they are not the same phone from the same manufacturer. (Although I’d argue that unless someone is rude enough to examine your phone, they likely wouldn’t notice a blaring difference.) Still, both phones have their use and both seem to attract different types of consumers. It’s important to understand which you are (and most people do.)

Embracing The Java Apps: Some people get absolutely giddy with excitement over the apps store. And for those folks, the clones might not be the phone for them. Because the CECT models use Java to download their apps and games. Now, with that said, there are literally thousands of free productivity, social networking, and gaming applications available through java. But, if you really want to browse the app store, you may be disappointed. I’d suggest having a look at the java applications to see if they speak to you. Many people are surprised at the quality and volume of what is offered. But, you usually don’t know until you look.
